Safety hazard use of multiple temporary heaters during construction

As the winter weather is upon us, ENMAX Power would like to remind developers, builders and contractors about the safety hazard of operating multiple temporary heaters at the same time during construction of multi-family housing.

When multiple temporary space heaters are used, severe overloading of transformers can occur. When transformers are overloaded:

  • The outside of the infrastructure can become extremely hot, posing a significant injury and fire hazard.
  • The units can be irreparably damaged, resulting in unplanned outages, delays to construction schedules and additional unit replacement costs.
    • If the unit can be repaired, a prolonged outage is required to allow for the transformer to cool prior to repair and re-energizing.
    • If the unit cannot be repaired, ENMAX Power may not have a replacement unit in stock due to the current global supply challenges.

Each situation is unique and dependent on several factors. Assessment is required prior to connecting more than one nine-kilowatt (9 kW) heater at a time. Contact getconnected@enmax.com to confirm how many heaters can safely be used at one time in your specific scenario.
