ENMAX takes home national award for safety
For our team members, safety isn’t just a policy—it’s a shared value guiding every step we take.
Late last year, ENMAX was recognized by Electricity Canada with the President’s Award for Safety Excellence in the Distribution category. This award recognizes companies with the fewest or no workplace injuries in 2023, based on how often injuries occurred, their severity and overall reported cases amongst other electricity corporations in Canada.
We know safety isn’t achieved by chance. It’s in our proactive mindset, the protocols we follow, the way we design our system, the training we prioritize, and the dedication of the teams doing the work to identify hazards and critical controls. This award recognizes the collective effort that goes into our team going home safely at the end of each day.
Doing safety differently through Human and Organizational Performance
In recent years, ENMAX has made a cultural shift in how we approach safety. We subscribe to human and organizational performance (HOP), a philosophy that doesn’t blame for errors, but ensures everyone learns from mistakes, which are bound to happen in any environment. And with those learnings, HOP reminds us to look at how we improve our organization’s processes and tools to better support workers’ safety. By shifting to a more supportive and forward-looking approach, which lets us consider what could go wrong before starting our work, we’ve found greater success.
“I am proud to work for an organization that makes safety our top priority. We don’t just tell workers to be safer; we enable them to work more safely by learning from them about what gets in the way of working safely and removing organizational barriers,” said Kris Kumarasinghe, Director, Field Operations. “The work we do here is important and being recognized on a national level by our industry shows the results of our efforts.”
“ENMAX would like to thank our team members for their dedication to safety and Electricity Canada for this prestigious award,” said Chris Smith, Director, Safety and Environmental Services. “We remain committed to leading in workplace safety within our industry and continuing to embrace HOP as part of our safety culture.”
