Meter installation and energization process

Getting a Site Identification number (Site ID) is a common first step to setting up a new electrical connection or upgrading an existing service. Learn the steps involved to get a new or temporary electrical service in your home or business.

Step 1: Confirm with ENMAX Power that your power request is feasible.

Step 2: Get a permit number

A certified electrical can help you obtain an electrical permit. For more information search 'electrical permit' on www.calgary.ca or contact your electrician for assistance.

Step 3: Get a Site ID

For a new electrical service, redevelopment, or an upgrade to an existing electrical service, you may need to obtain a Site ID. To successfully complete this process, you will need to provide the following information:

Contact information
Address
Service type (building or usage type)
Electrical characteristics (voltage, amperage, phases and wire count)
Permit number (requirements may vary, contact your local electrician or electrical inspector)

Step 4: Select an electrical retailer

Your electrical retailer will manage the charge for your electricity consumption and submit an energizing request for your site on your behalf. You will use the Site ID to set up your service with your retailer.

Step 5: Getting your site ready

Your electrician will prepare your site as per the Electrical Inspection Authority and ENMAX Metering Standards.

Metered services rated over 200 amps require ENMAX Current Transformers (CTs).

If your service requires CT's a site readiness check is required at this point. Please declare your site readiness by completing the CT Readiness Checklist.

Step 6: Request site energization

Depending on your service request, your site may require an inspection by the Electrical Inspection Authority and ENMAX Power to confirm it meet ENMAX Metering Standards and are approved by the Electrical Inspection Authority.

Contact your electrical retailer for an energizing request and meter installation.

Step 7: Get the power flowing

Your electrical retailer will then submit a request for ENMAX Power to energize your site and install the meter. ENMAX will inspect the site and confirm it is ready and safe to energize.

CT site readiness:

This checklist must be completed before a site visit will be made to complete your CT metered service. This checklist applies to sites that contain a metered service amperage exceeding 200 amps.

Installation will be scheduled during regular working hours (M-F; 8AM - 4 PM) unless otherwise requested. After-hours work can be requested and is subject to availability. Please note, an additional after-hours fee will apply. Request here.
