Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX
Calgary, Alta. – The Federation of Calgary Communities is excited to announce the 2024 grant recipients for Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX. Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX began in 2015 with the goal of supporting community-based organizations to become more energy-efficient and help create vibrant community spaces.
Energizing Spaces offers three streams of funding including up to $10,000 for new or replacement appliances or LED lighting, and up to $500 in portable market lighting. In addition, there is an opportunity for one community to receive an Install Day package. Install Day offers a unique opportunity for one community space to receive an energy-efficiency makeover, complete with an educational workshop to supports its residents to learn how to reduce their own climate footprint.
Bowness Community Association is the proud recipient of this year’s Install Day: “We’re thrilled to offer this fantastic educational opportunity to our residents and learn how we can use simple low-cost solutions to save energy – and money – in our homes and community spaces,” said Molly MacRae, Executive Director.
This year, 24 organizations submitted requests totalling $156,927 in funding. This included 14 requests for appliances, and 10 requests for LED safety or rink lighting projects. A committee of community-minded volunteers reviewed each proposal and awarded 15 grants worth $98,310 to deserving community organizations across Calgary.
Through this round of applications, Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX will address community safety concerns with improved rink and security lighting; help mitigate food insecurity by making a community fridge project a reality; and light up a community’s new Outdoor Activity Hub, making it a gathering space for years to come.
“Supporting programs that make energy efficiency efforts accessible is a priority at ENMAX,” said Krista Moroz, Manager, Community Partnerships & External Relations at ENMAX. “We’re thrilled to help community associations across the city enhance their facilities so they can continue to enrich the lives of Calgarians.”
“It's remarkable how something as simple as a new fridge or an energy-efficient lightbulb can have such a profound impact on a community,” said Leslie Evans, Executive Director at the Federation of Calgary Communities. “Through Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX, we’re not just upgrading appliances and lighting—we’re revitalizing the heart of these neighborhoods. By making community spaces safer, more efficient, and sustainable, we’re ensuring they remain vibrant hubs where residents can connect, learn, and thrive for years to come.”
To date, this joint program has distributed 220 grants and invested $805,849 to help community organizations decrease operating costs, increase safety of outdoor areas and enhance their capacity to offer events, childcare and other programming all while reducing their climate footprint.
